Ideas of dissent vary for different people in different contexts. The embodiment of individual gestures and movement phrases that signify dissent can build collectively around expressions of resistance that may look different in form but share similar intentions. In this workshop, we will explore the organically expanding number 15 (1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 = 15) as we add each participant's expressions of dissent to build a collective whole. The process may lead us to new questions, such as asking what we find oppressive and why. The workshop is for youth/young adults and adults of any age with a particular emphasis on POC, Womyn, LGBT folks. Non-dancers are especially welcome!
About Ananya Chatterjea, artistic director, choreographer, dancer, scholar, educator
A native of Kolkata, India, Chatterjea envisions her work in the field of dance as a “call to action” with particular focus on women artists of color. She also is a Professor of Theatre Arts and Dance at the University of Minnesota. The creative process of Ananya Dance Theatre incorporates the interactive research of workshops like this one into concert productions, and our participation will inform the development of a new work, "Shyamali" and its exploration of women's dissent as a vital force.
